Mary E. Kentula, M.S. ’73, Ph.D. ’83

Mary E. Kentula died Feb. 5 in Albany, Oregon. She was 76. A nationally recognized wetland scientist known among colleagues as the “Queen of the Swamp,” Kentula spent more than three decades with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Corvallis. Her research showed that creating wetlands did not necessarily replace the ecological functions of those that were lost, helping reshape restoration practices and inform implementation of the Clean Water Act. She later led the first National Wetland Condition Assessment, a nationwide survey that continues to guide environmental decision-making. As courtesy faculty at Oregon State, she mentored more than two dozen students and helped train a new generation of wetland scientists. She was awarded the Society of Wetland Scientists Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019, reflecting a career devoted not only to advancing knowledge, but also to helping others find their place in the field. She was predeceased by her husband, Professor Emeritus Donald J. Armstrong, and is survived by her sister-in-law, Colleen Kentula; her cousin, Rick “Rico” Racosky; and her chosen family, Amanda Nahlik and Eric Emerson. Gideon Alegado, M.S. ’76, Ed.D. ’98

Gideon Alegado died April 25 in Vancouver, Washington. He was 83. For generations of students, faculty and staff, Alegado was one of the Memorial Union’s most familiar and welcoming faces. As the night manager and later building manager, he helped guests, encouraged students and often played the piano, creating a sense of warmth, hospitality and belonging. He was also the longtime advisor to the Filipino American Student Association, later known as Isang Bansang Pilipino. Born and raised in the Philippines, Alegado moved to Corvallis with his late wife, Rachel Tobias Alegado, M.S. ’76, to pursue graduate studies. (The couple is pictured here together.) In 1983, while studying for his doctorate in education, he joined the MU staff, where he worked for 25 years, until 2008. After retiring, he spent six months each year in the Philippines as president of the Christian college his adoptive parents founded and where his own love of education began. Robert J. Schultz

Robert “Bob” Schultz (at left, shown here with President Emeritus Ed Ray), a legendary educator and steward of Oregon’s public lands, died on April 2. He was 92. During his 56 years teaching at Oregon State, nearly every student in civil and construction engineering passed through his classroom. He emphasized fundamentals like “draw a sketch” and “check your work”  — lessons his students carried throughout their careers. One of his most enduring public contributions came in 1967 with the passage of the Oregon Beach Bill. He played a critical role in developing the methodology that defined the boundary between public and private lands along the coast. This work helped secure permanent public access to Oregon’s beaches. Outside of OSU, he helped practicing surveyors prepare for and pass licensure exams. His workshops reached generations of land surveyors, including most of those registered in the state. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Constance Schultz; son John Schultz, ’95; and daughters Anne Marie Schultz, Georgeanne Windisch and Mary-Jo Schultz, ’01.
