Carmen Ford-Phillips died on Sept. 6 in Beaverton at age 88. Part of the Ford family, with deep ties to Oregon State, she earned a bachelor’s degree in home economics and a master’s in nutrition and food management from the university. She married Kent Phillips in 1958 and raised three children in Lake Oswego and, later, Corvallis. An accomplished entrepreneur who owned two fabric stores and a quarter horse breeding facility, she believed strongly in giving back to the community and served as an Oregon 4-H Foundation trustee, as a trustee at Oregon Health & Science University, on the Ford Family Foundation board and in leadership roles for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Before her death, she donated $7 million to OSU’s Marine Mammal Institute, ensuring future generations will benefit from its world-class education and research. She is survived by her brother Allyn Ford; her children, Gerald Phillips, David Phillips and Kathryn (Phillips) Bauer; and seven grandchildren including Kristofer Bauer, ’20, and current OSU student Joshua Phillips. Sue Kesey, co-founder of Springfield Creamery, died on Aug. 18 at the age of 86. For more than six decades, she helped guide the family business she launched with her husband, Chuck Kesey, ’61, serving as general manager, CFO and eventually CEO. Home of Nancy’s Yogurt, the creamery gained national attention as the first U.S. producer of yogurt with live probiotics, helping spark the natural foods movement. It also holds a place in music history. In the early 1970s, Chuck’s brother — novelist Ken Kesey — connected the couple with the Grateful Dead, who played a benefit concert for the company. That legendary performance, captured in the documentary Sunshine Daydream, became known as one of the band’s most culturally essential shows. As Nancy’s Yogurt grew in popularity, the Keseys opened the Health Food and Pool Store in Springfield, a countercultural hub until its 1987 closure. Reflecting on her life’s work in 2023, Sue told the Rooted in Organic podcast, “Knowing that you’re making something that’s so good for people — so good for your belly — is a worthy mission to have.” Sue is survived by her husband, Chuck; her daughter Sheryl Kesey Thompson; her son Kit Kesey; and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as her sister, Mary Lou Jameson Rueck, ’64, and nephew and OSU Head Coach Scott Rueck, ’92, MAT ’93. Larry M. Rymon, who played a pivotal role in reintroducing ospreys to Pennsylvania, died June 18 at age 90. A longtime biology professor at East Stroudsburg University, Rymon realized the state’s osprey population had not recovered after the pesticide DDT was banned in 1972. In 1980, he launched a then-controversial plan to relocate fledgling ospreys from other states to human-tended nests. Over the next 18 years, he persisted until the bird population was reestablished. His work was the subject of the documentary Return from Forever, and his methods were later adopted to help reintroduce bald eagles to Pennsylvania. “Larry developed his love of the environment through his enriching experiences at OSU and living in the beautiful state of Oregon,” said his wife, Barbara Rymon. “He brought that love back to Pennsylvania, instituting an environmental studies program and sharing it with his many students.” He is survived by Barbara, his son Tyler and daughter Holly. Bruce Frederick Eldridge, renowned medical entomologist and former Oregon State professor, died Feb. 5 in Davis, California. He was 91. Eldridge began his career in the U.S. Army, specializing in mosquito-borne diseases. After 21 years of military service, he was professor and chair of the Department of Entomology at Oregon State University from 1978 to 1986, later joining the faculty at UC Davis. He played a pivotal role in modernizing mosquito and arbovirus surveillance systems in California, pioneering the use of websites for reporting data in the 1990s, standardizing surveillance site registration, and developing early GIS mapping capabilities. These innovations became the foundation of systems now used by mosquito control and public health agencies nationwide. In 2007, he received the Harry Hoogstraal Medal for Outstanding Achievement in Medical Entomology, one of the field’s highest honors. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; daughter Deborah Thomson, ’81; sons Stuart, ’82, and Kenneth; and grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Photo courtesy of UC Davis
